Turkey Tail aka Tramates Versicolor: A Wealth of Healing

Turkey Tail aka Tramates Versicolor: A Wealth of Healing

Turkey tail (Tramates versicolor) is a decomposer fungi, aka a saprophytic fungus. In short, they feed off of decomposing wood and turn it into nutrients for the soil to soak up and redistribute into nearby plants and trees. While doing so, the mushroom fruit body becomes rich in nutrients itself and as a result, its tissue holds many medicinal compounds. This mushroom contains an abundance of physiologically bioactive compounds, most notably β-glucan polysaccharides, which are responsible for its antioxidant, neuroprotective, lipid-lowering, immune-modulating, and anticancer effects. Turkey tail has also been found to have antidiabetic, neurotrophic, wound healing, antifibrotic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects as well.

The name Tramates versicolor translates to "of many colors". Turkey tail mushroom is thin and multicolored in distinct striations of blue, white, brown, red, and orange, and found on rotting wood like stumps or fallen logs. Once identified you’ll know exactly where the name comes from as they so well resemble the outspread feathers of a turkey.
