Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) is widely valued for immune and metabolic support like many other mushrooms, but it stands out for several compounds that are especially well studied and, in some cases, clinically used. Most notably, shiitake contains lentinan, a specific beta-glucan polysaccharide that has been used as an adjunct cancer therapy in Japan. Lentinan has demonstrated immune-stimulating effects—particularly enhancing macrophage, T-cell, and natural killer (NK) cell activity—and has been studied in human clinical settings more extensively than the polysaccharides of most culinary mushrooms. Shiitake also contains eritadenine, a compound relatively unique to this species that has been shown to help lower cholesterol by influencing lipid metabolism in the liver.
In addition, shiitake produces lenthionine, a sulfur-containing compound responsible for its characteristic aroma, which also has antimicrobial properties. While many mushrooms contain beta-glucans and antioxidants, shiitake’s combination of lentinan (with clinical oncology research), eritadenine (cholesterol modulation), and lenthionine (antimicrobial activity) gives it a distinctive profile. It is one of the few commonly eaten mushrooms with both culinary popularity and a long history of formal medical research and therapeutic application.
What are tinctures?
Tinctures are extracts wherein the main solvent is a high proof alcohol.
Forage & Cultivate Shiitake Tincture is made from certified organic cane alcohol, reverse osmosis and/or deionized water, and 100% shiitake fruit body grown by us. All of our tinctures are dual extracted, meaning they are extracted for both their alcohol soluble and their water soluble active compounds.
How do I take my Shiitake Tincture?
Shake well before using. Take your tincture once in the morning and once in the afternoon by filling the attached dropper 1 or 2 times (2-4 mL/day), distributing it under the tongue, or in a drink of your choice.
