Maitake aka Hen of the Woods

Maitake aka Hen of the Woods

Aside from being a premier delicacy for the kitchen, hen of the woods is bursting with valuable medicinal structures.

For starters, hen of the woods contains a higher amino acid profile than the majority of cultivated mushrooms. They even carry a large array of essential amino acids including but not limited to: L. Histidine, L. Methionine, L. Tryptophan, L. Lysine, L. Threonine.

The fruiting body and mycelium of G. frondosa have been determined to be a potent source of polysaccharides with dramatic health promoting potential.  In laboratory settings, some maitake extracts have shown promise as immunomodulating agents, adjuncts for cancer and HIV therapy, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and hepatitis.

More recent studies have isolated a larger array of compounds which have been shown to also carry antitumor and anticarcinogenic traits but also contain antidiabetic properties, reduce high-cholesterol levels, and reduce the levels of ROS (oxygen reactive species) accumulated in cells. High ROS in our cells contribute to aging, inflammation, cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and metabolic disorders. There are even some compounds associated with anti-herpes simplex virus. If you are already taking a blood sugar medication you should avoid taking hen of the woods extract as the concurrent use may drop your blood sugar levels too low.

What are tinctures?

Tinctures are extracts wherein the main solvent is a high proof alcohol.

Forage & Cultivate Hen of the Woods Tincture is made from certified organic cane alcohol, reverse osmosis and/or deionized water, and 100% fresh hen of the woods mushrooms we grow using organic substrate.  All of our tinctures are dual extracted, meaning they are extracted for both their alcohol soluble and their water soluble active compounds.

How should I take my Hen of the Woods tincture?

Shake well before using. Take your tincture once in the morning and once in the afternoon by filling the attached dropper 1 or 2 times (2-4 mL/day), distributing it under the tongue, or in a drink of your choice.
